Meet Edward Rooks

Edward Rooks is a wildlife artist living in San Jose, CA. He grew up on the Caribbean island nation of Trinidad and Tobago. In 1983, he graduated Magna Cum Laude from Syracuse University, with a B.F.A. in Illustration. While at University, he worked during the summer for the Asa Wright Nature Centre, located in the mountainous rainforest of Trinidad where he learned to be a nature guide and participated in workshops in bird photography and nature painting. After graduation, he worked full time at the Nature Centre until 1986 when he emigrated to United States.

Edward's artwork has won awards and honors. In 1993, his Golden Trout appeared on the California Sport Fishing License. In 1994, his painting of Trinidad's Oilbirds won the 1st place award in a juried art show at the Los Gatos Art Gallery, and his painting of a California Tiger Salamander won the 1st place award in the California Department of Fish and Game's Native Species Stamp Contest. And in 1996, his wine label for Johnston's Vineyard of Napa Valley won the Gold Medal in the label contest of the New World International Wine Competition. In addition, his illustrations appear in biological journals, nature magazines, booklets, newsletters and calendars. His paintings and prints are often on display at the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society.

Edward occasionally teaches workshops on sketching birds at his local Audubon Society chapters, at the annual Central Valley Birding Symposium in Stockton, CA., at the California Fish and Wildlife's Wild on Wetlands Weekend in Los Banos, CA. and on the Cheesemans' Ecology Safari's bi-annual voyage to Antarctica. He continues to visit Trinidad and Tobago as a tour guide, and since 1990 has led several nature/bird-watching tours to Trinidad and Tobago for the Cheesemans' Ecology Safaris. He is also a consultant for Santa Clara University's International Programs, assisting with their annual summer course in Trinidad and Tobago.
